LODGING

We wish the villa was big enough to have you all stay with us, but alas it will only fit immediate family. (If you are staying in the villa, you can find photographs and information on the RECEPTION page.) We have reserved blocks of rooms and worked out rate deals to fit different budgets.

Istituto Santa Margherita (2 stars)

Santa Margherita is a simple nunnery run by the Suore Serve di Maria Riparatrice. It is located just outside the walls of Cortona, only a short walk from the town center. Like many nunneries in central Italy, it has refurbished itself to offer no-frills but comfortable, clean accomodations to travelers. There is presently a community of 17 Sisters living at the Institute, although the lodgings are run separately. Photographs of the Istituto can be found at the top of this page and on the left.

We have negotiated a rate of €54/night ($75-80), plus an optional continental breakfast for an additional €4 per person. Each room has its own private bath. The rate applies to each of the 22 rooms based on two-person occupancy, but some of the rooms can also be booked as triples. We are holding the entire place for 4 nights (covering the nights of Wednesday June 30 through Saturday July 3). Half the rooms are being held for an additional 2 nights (Monday & Tuesday). However, the nuns have hosted wedding groups before, and they will try to accommodate individual travel plans, which they know may differ.

For maps and directions, please see DIRECTIONS. The address is:

Casa per Ferie "Santa Margherita"

Contact: Sig.ra Angela Schiavi

If you would like to make a reservation, contact Ms. Schiavi at the telephone number or email above. Cite the "Cavagna Wedding." I'm afraid we are unsure how good her English is, so if you have any problems communicating, contact us and we'll help.

History of the Institute: The building was built in 1930-35 and was used for needy Cortonese children; then it became the G.I.L.E. (Gioventù Italiana Littorio Estero), accomodating children of Italians living abroad. Until the 1970's the Institute was a female college. It has been recently restored.

Hotel San Luca (4 stars)

If you prefer a few more amenities, there is the 4-star Hotel San Luca, located on Piazza Garibaldi by the city walls, even closer to the centre of town. The hotel advertises rooms with air conditioning, satellite TV, minibars, and safes, and it has a business center where you can use the Internet for an extra charge. The hotel also has several terraces with impressive views, and offers breakfast. Photographs can be found along the left of this page.

We have reserved 5 rooms here, each for 4 nights (covering the nights of Wednesday June 30 through Saturday July 3), at a rate of €100/night ($140-$145). Like Santa Margherita, they should be flexible with exact arrival and departure dates.

Other Alternatives

If you would prefer a country stay, we highly recommend chef Marta and Guilia’s Agriturismo Il Cucciolo—two valleys to the north and about 30 minutes by car from Villa Michelangelo. Two-night minimum stays are required and the best deals are by the week. Marta is fluent in English (her husband is American), and for our Italian friends who have dogs, Il Cucciolo welcomes them. The only drawback is that it's not very convenient to Cortona itself—45 to 60 minutes by car over a high ridge. (It is, on the other hand, only a few minutes from L'Archibugio, where we are planning to have dinner Thursday night.) Click Here to visit the website.

We can also suggest the Casa San Martino, just across the valley from Villa Michelangelo and convenient to both the ceremony and the reception. Heidi stayed there once several years ago and thought it was delightful. Click Here to visit the website.

There are also many hotels around Lake Trasimeno in the next valley to the south.

IMPORTANT!

If possible, we would appreciate knowing your lodging arrangements when you rsvp.

Rooms in Cortona fill up quickly. Therefore, we have put a substantial deposit down on the rooms at Istituto Santa Margherita and Hotel San Luca. If we must make any cancellations, we need to do so as early as possible. We will release half of the unoccupied rooms by the end of March, and the other half at the end of April, holding only one or two rooms at Santa Margherita in reserve. Check with us if you need to make a late booking.

Also, please note that air conditioning is not standard in Italy.

Check back regularly for changes and additions.
